This band hails from Amsterdam in The Netherlands and this six track EP runs for forty minutes. The soprano voice of Liselot Mazee likes to push you into the well-known direction of the tons of gothic metal bands in this scene. However, I hear a slightly different approach in opener "Moondale”. I hear a sound, that marks two different music styles coming together. Gothic metal with a melodic touch, because of the soprano vocals and a heavy and rather brutal touch, because of the death metal grunts. Their melodic, slightly symphonic sound could even be very enjoyable for classic hard rock fans, that like the sound of IRON MAIDEN. Try to put these two styles into a blender and listen to the sound of ALANTIA with an open mind and you will be positively surprised. Just listen to the beginning of "Erase A Trace” and you’ll be devastated about the heaviness of this track. Besides the beautiful vocals of Liselot, the band consists of Mark Rog on guitar and brutal grunts, Nicky Walraven on bass and backing vocals, Tom van der Schaaf on guitar, Erik Slooten on keyboards and Nan de Vent on drums. You have read it right, the band consists of three metal ladies, which is fifty percent. You don’t see that too often, which makes this band even more interesting for us. I really L-O-V-E-D the speed changes in combination with the crying keyboards and the riffing guitars. It’s the introduction to a short instrumental part with an exciting heavy edge to it. "Somnium” contains a lot of speed changes and another leading role for the brutal keyboard attacks. If this doesn’t sound exciting to you, then I’ll eat my hat. The guitars also ask for some special attention in this song, but the vocals of Liselot reign supreme here. "Lady Hawke” leans a bit more towards the sound, that you would expect from ALANTIA, which is a mix of WITHIN TEMPTATION (slower) and NIGHTWISH. Musically, it is perfectly done, but comparing to the other tracks, it sounds more average. Then we have arrived to the next song "Waltz”, which sounds like some kind of metal version of a waltz. DORO has written her version of the "Metal Tango”, but this is another ballroom dance, that you’ll be able to enjoy in a ‘metal version’ right now. It’s an instrumental tune, which sounds quite nice in my opinion. The best is saved for last on this ten minute plus epic masterpiece, called "Tempted Dark Art”. It includes heavy drum rolls, a horror type of keyboard sound, guitar riffs, some heavy grunts and a musical approach, that would even please the many SAVATAGE fans. It’s the highlight on this CD for me. A CD, that surprised me many times and proves that there’s still a lot of talent in our beautiful country. ALANTIA can be reached by writing to alantia@live.nl. Dutch Gothic Metal newcomers Alantia released their self-titled debut demo back in 2010, it sees the very essence of Dutch Gothic Metal that has captivated many across the globe, whilst not as symphonic or melodic as their fellow countrymen Within Temptation, the Gothic music certainly has no definitive contrast from both bands. The sextet from the capital Amsterdam prove that there is more to their country than windmills, clogs and canals, but in terms of power Alantia are more powerful than any cannabis used in the capital. With the keyboard developing the atmosphere, the other five members use all darkness summoned to finalise a promising Dutch Metal band.

Alantia krijgt nieuwe zangeres

Ongeveer een maand geleden ontving Alantia het vervelende nieuws dat Yvette ging stoppen met Alantia. Haar werkverplichtingen werden steeds moeilijker te combineren met het zingen in Alantia, en daarom heeft zij de beslissing genomen niet met Alantia verder te gaan. De band wil haar het aller beste wensen met haar (muzikale) carrière, en wij willen haar bedanken voor haar waardevolle bijdrage aan Alantia en de muziek.
En dus begon de jacht op een nieuwe zangeres. Niet veel later ontvingen wij bericht van Liselot. Zij kwam op auditie en wij waren allen zeer onder de indruk van haar zangprestaties. Toen besloten wij haar aan te nemen als nieuwe zangeres. Op dit moment is het zomervakantie en iedereen is met zijn eigen ding bezig. Maar, na de zomer zijn we keihard terug met een nieuwe zangeres!

Meer informatie over de band:
Alantia, een relatief nieuwe band, komt van Nederlandse bodem en brengt female-fronted metal met soms wat symphonic power metal invloeden. De band is opgericht in 2006 door Miran & Nan welke al enige jaren in verschillende bandjes speelden. Graag wilden zij een band oprichten welke muziek maakten waar zij voor de volle 100 procent achter stonden. Al snel melden zich verschillende leden aan maar toch bleek het niet zo succesvol al n de 1e instantie gedacht. Zo was het samenstellen van de band in 2008 nog steeds aan de gang. In 2009 besloot zangeres Miran te stoppen met de band ivm oor-problemen. Al snel kwam Yvette als zangeres de band versterken en dit bleek een goede klik. In 2009 was de band dan eindelijk compleet en brengt Alantia nu haar 1e demo.

Het album:
de 1e plaat van Mindshade bevat 6 nummers en doet direct denken aan het Nederlandse Ex-Libris en aan het iets oudere werk van The Gathering (mandylion). De zang van Yvette is krachtig, soms sopraan maar soms ook angstaanjagend. Dit laatste klinkt misschien negatief, integendeel zelfs! De manier waarop zij haar stem gebruikt is soms wat spooky maar past perfect binnen de muziek. Dit geeft op deze momenten een zeer duister gevoel en toch wil je blijven luisteren. De grunts komen zo nu en dan eens voor op de plaat en de afwisseling me Yvette klinkt erg goed. Ietwat meer grunts hadden zeker niet misstaan op deze plaat. De 6 nummers op deze plaat zijn allemaal erg verschillend maar toch wel een geheel. De gehele plaat is soms wat dromerig, neem bijvoorbeeld het nummer ‘Pictures of my Past’ welke een prachtig sprookjes-achtig intro heeft en daarna een zweverig the Gathering-achtig nummer brengt maar op het laatst nog even een op wat lekkere riffs trakteert. Wat die riffs betreft, deze komen verschillende malen voor op de plaat en ook krijgt de luisteraar nog wat (korte) solo’s voorgeschoteld, prima! Tegenover soms wat dromerige songs staan ook nummers waarop je niet stil kunt blijven zitten, neem bijvoorbeeld Deceit als voorbeeld. Ook in dit nummer weer super strakke en fijne riffs en hier mag de luisteraar er wat langer van genieten! Dat het een 1e plaat van de band is, is nog wel te horen. Zo is nog niet alles even goed en strak uitgebalanceerd, klinkt de plaat soms ietwat dof en zijn niet alle instrumenten altijd even goed te onderscheiden. Maar of dit de luisterpret mag drukken? Nee, absoluut niet. Duidelijk hoorbaar is dat de band zeer goede muzikanten in huis heeft en het is en blijft natuurlijk een demo.

Conclusie:
De 6 nummers op deze plaat geven een duidelijk en helder beeld wat deze band wil laten horen aan de rest van de wereld. Yvette’s stem is lekker om naar te luisteren, in tegenstelling tot veel andere ongetekende bands. De muziekanten binnen de band spelen strak en de riffs waar de luisteraar letterlijk op getrakteerd wordt resulteert in een super demo. Maar met 6 nummers is het eerder een EP of mini-cd te noemen. Het geheel klinkt soms wat dof, maar het is natuurlijk een demo. De luisterpret wordt hier echter niet door onderdrukt! Voor fans van Nightwish, Within Temptation en symphonic power metal female-fronted bands zal het zeker een aanwinst in de cd kast zijn!

Het gothic genre blijft maar groeien. Je hoeft maar ergens een repetitielokaal binnen te lopen en er speelt wel ergens zo een bandje. Alantia is één van de vele nieuwe bands in dit genre en bracht onlangs zijn eerste demo uit. De grootste invloeden:Nightwish en Kamelot.

De Nederlandse band Alantia stamt uit 2006 maar heeft pas sinds 2009 een stabiele line-up die sterk genoeg is om daadwerkelijk muziek uit te brengen. De eerste release kwam dan ook snel in de vorm van een titelloze demo met daarop zes liedjes. Alantia bestaat uit drie vrouwen en drie mannen en heeft daarmee in ieder geval al een natuurlijke balans gevonden.

Gothic metal is altijd even zoeken. Ik weet niet waar het aan ligt maar bij deze stijl vind ik het de eerste keer altijd een beetje onwennig klinken, meestal is dat na een paar nummers over en soms groeit dat gevoel alleen maar. Bij Alantiagroeit dit gevoel alleen maar, puur omdat ik het idee krijg dat de band er zelf nog niet helemaal over uit is welke kant het op wilt gaan. Duidelijk is is datNightwish heel veel invloed heeft gehad maar het zijn meer de andere muzikale kenmerken die het speciaal maken.

Meest opvallende is de toetsenist, begrijp me niet verkeerd die man kan heel goed spelen maar het past er soms totaal niet bij. Er staan solo's op deze demo die er gewoon totaal niet op thuishoren. Voor het gemak maak ik even de vergelijking met de Vlaamse band Quantum Fantay , zij hebben een toetsenist (waar ik groot fan van ben) die zich maar al te graag helemaal laat gaan, dit gevoel krijg ik bij Alantia ook. Verschil is dat het bij de Vlaamse band goed past omdat de rest van de band er rekening mee houd, Alantia doet dat niet.

De gitaren op deze demo daarentegen passen wel zeer goed bij de muziek, sterker nog zij maken heel de cd. Mooie riffs en vooral mooie melodieën stralen een rust uit die de demo aangenaam maakt om naar te luisteren. Als ik ergens veel Nightwish in hoor dan is het wel in de gitaren. Door die basis van de muziek volg de zang hetzelfde stramien en is een link naar Tarja zo gemaakt. Echt helemaal zuiver is de stem nog niet maar ik geloof wel dat ze in e toekomst daar aan kan werken.

Kortom: deze demo is een leuk begin voor deze Nederlandse band maar er moet nog hard gewerkt worden. Eerst een plan maken voor een muzikale richtig en zo de keyboard er beter in passen. Voor de overige bandleden geloof ik best dat het allemaal wel goed gaat komen in de toekomst.

From The Netherlands, Alantia play good symphonic power metal with operatic vocals provided by Yvette. The bands new demo has just been made available and it is this style that dominates the 6-songs and over 30-minutes worth of music.

"Solitary Life" is a strong opener that starts off slow but quickly builds and is followed by another powerful track "To Your Demise". The vocals of Yvette are well done as she gives her operatic all throughout the course of the Demo. One of my favorite things about the music featured here is the cool interplay between the keyboards (played by Erik) and the guitar. The guitar duo of Markus and Tom make a formidable pair and keyboardist Erik has some moments where he is allowed to shine as well. The 7-minute third track "Echoes of Perdition" is without a doubt, a huge highlight for me. The overall vibe of the track is dark and atmospheric and it includes some great, heavy guitar riffs. This track is the only one to feature male, growling vocals which adds to the sinister nature of the track. The final track "Deceit" quickly became another favorite. The song is highlighted by some great guitar solos that bring the CD to a close.

Alantia has recorded a demo that showcases the bands strong musicianship. The 6-songs contained here should be a welcomed sight for fans of Tarja era Nightwish and Sonata Arctica, still there is plenty here that should set the band a part from the crowded symphonic power metal pack.

Thanks to Nightwish there seems to be an abundance of female-fronted Power Metal bands on the go these days. The Netherlands in particular has been a source for a large number of these bands, and Alantia follow suit, sourcing the earlier Nightwish period more than anything else. Although the vocal style usually sticks to the semi-opratic style that most of these type of bands tend to go for there are moments where former vocalist Yvette sounds similar to one Anneke van Giersbergen which tend to stand out more than the former style. Sadly it's not the strongest of performances, not bad, but a little weak at points as it sounds like the high notes are a bit out of her range. The first song Solitary Life kind of demonstrates what I mean. The songs itself is kind of safe sounding, not exactly something that draws you in as an album opener and is probably the weakest song of the demo.

To Your Demise steps things up a lot more, with some pretty awesome keyboard lines inbetween the verses, though the solo patch being used leaves a fair bit to be desired. There's a fantastic interlude about two and a half minutes that's somewhat letdown by the vocals push everything to the background. That cheesy keyboard lead patch resurfaces in the outro before a lead in to the next track that works alright barring the piano chord stabs that sound off in a bad way. Echoes of Perdition is pretty doomy, even with that keyboard tone poking through. It's surprisingly heavy sounding even with the gripes I have with the rest of the tracks, and it too is pretty good. Next up is a ballad, Pictures of My Past. One of the main things I noticed about it was that the bass pretty much lead the music which was actually kinda cool, and the guitar solo fit in pretty well in a sort of 80's power ballad way. I actually got images of Guns'n'Roses's November Rain for them, so kudos!

The Watcher is a folksy, mid paced affair and the Nightwish elements are pretty prominent with lots of flutes and the bellish tone that pops up in so many of their songs. It's good enough, but didn't jump straight out at me as such. Finally we come to Deceit, with an intro that got me all excited as it was screaming Sonata Arctica, but sadly went down another route as pianos hit instead of big strings, dampening my hopes a bit. It's still a good song nonetheless, very power metally in nature with a pretty awesome heavy bit at about 2:50 but suffers the same fate that the interlude in Into Your Demise does, with the vocals ruining the mood.

I think I've mentioned my main problems with the demo in the review, namely the vocals just not being good enough and the occasional dodgy keyboard sound. For a demo it didn't sound too bad either, but ther was a fair bit of muddiness with the drums and the vocals, making the former hard to separate out and the latter difficult to understand. The vocals were pretty loud in the mix, and even though they are the focal point of the band it'd have been nice if everything else wasn't in the background so much, but as mentioned it's a demo recording and I've heard a lot worse than this.

Overall I'm interested to hear how the new singer sounds as I didn't take too well to their last one. The music is solid, well executed and pretty engaging and I hope that Alantia have a vocalist that can do them justice. While a number of bands in this niche tend to be pretty damned sterile and boring they have a certain energy and can be pretty bombastic sounding as proven by some songs which is something I hope they can capitalise on and not be swallowed into the mire that a lot of bands in this style do.
